UK 16-17 Saver Railcard Now Lasts a Full Year

The UK 16-17 Saver railcard now lasts for a full year from the date of purchase. From 17 August 2026, it no longer expires automatically when the holder turns 18.

The change means more young people can keep using the railcard’s 50% discount on eligible rail fares during the school, college or training year.

What changed in 2026?

Previously, a 16-17 Saver could stop being valid when the cardholder turned 18. The Department for Transport says this left more than 70,000 young people a year without the maximum discount available to their peers.

From 17 August 2026, a newly purchased 16-17 Saver is valid for 12 months from the purchase date, even if the holder turns 18 during that period.

How much can students save?

The railcard offers 50% off eligible rail fares. The government says people who previously lost access to the discount were on average about £175 worse off.

For families new to the UK, this can matter if a teenager travels regularly to school, college, training or work by train.

Who should check this?

• Students aged 16 or 17 who regularly travel by train.
• Young people starting college, apprenticeships or training.
• Families budgeting for regular rail travel during the academic year.
• Anyone who avoided buying the railcard because they thought it would stop working at age 18.

What should you do before buying?

Check the current 16-17 Saver terms and the journeys you normally make. Not every ticket type is discounted in exactly the same way, so compare the railcard price with your expected savings.
