CINANIMA 2026: discover animation and family films in Espinho

Babylon Radio
Listen nowA film afternoon can be a simple way to discover a new town, especially when the programme offers something for adults and children. CINANIMA returns to Espinho from 6 to 22 November, marking its 50th edition with animation, exhibitions, conversations and live music. All times below are local.
The international animation festival stretches across 17 days this year. For residents new to northern Portugal, it is an invitation to explore a cultural event beyond the usual big-city venues. You can choose one screening rather than planning your whole month around the programme.
Start with a family afternoon
The family programme brings together selections from other animation festivals, including Zlín, IndieJúnior, Bang Awards and MONSTRA. Its short films offer different styles, countries and ways of telling a story.
On Saturday 7 November at 15:00, the Centro Multimeios’ Sala António Gaio hosts a 45-minute selection of Czech animation, rated M/3. On Sunday 8 November at the same time and venue, IndieJúnior presents a 50-minute sea-themed programme, also rated M/3.
Check the language and age information for the session you choose. Animation does not automatically mean a film is suitable for every child, or that it has no dialogue.
Hear the films with a live orchestra
For a different experience, the 2026 programme lists cine-concerts with Orquestra Clássica de Espinho at the Auditório de Espinho on 14 and 15 November, both at 18:00.
The 75-minute programme pairs Peter and the Wolf and The Snowman with live orchestral accompaniment. It is rated M/6. Follow the concert’s own ticket link in the festival programme and check current availability before making plans.
The anniversary also reaches beyond screenings. An interactive sound-and-animation exhibition opens at FACE, Fórum de Arte e Cultura de Espinho, on 7 November at 14:00. It explores how sounds made with recycled objects can work with animated images.
Choose your ticket and venue
The current 50th-edition general pass is listed at €60, or €30 for students with proof of enrolment. It includes the categories of sessions listed by the organiser, but excludes the opening and closing sessions. Do not assume that every separately ticketed event is included.
If you only want one outing, use the individual programme entry to check booking arrangements. Venues vary, so confirm the location as well as the time. Pick a story that interests you, invite someone along and leave time to enjoy Espinho between screenings.
