Canada’s Federal Minimum Wage Is $18.15 in 2026: Who It Applies To

Canada’s federal minimum wage is $18.15 per hour from 1 April 2026. But that does not mean every worker in Canada is paid under the federal rate.

Who does the federal minimum wage cover?

The federal rate applies mainly to workers in federally regulated private-sector industries. Examples can include banking, telecommunications and certain transport businesses that operate across provincial or international borders.

Most other workers are covered by the minimum wage rules of the province or territory where they work.

What if the provincial minimum wage is higher?

If a federally regulated employee works in a province or territory with a higher minimum wage, the employer must pay the higher rate.

What changed in 2026?

The federal minimum wage increased to $18.15 per hour on 1 April 2026. The rate is adjusted each year using inflation data.

What should newcomers check?

If you have just started work in Canada, first confirm whether your workplace is federally or provincially regulated. Then compare the hourly rate shown on your payslip with the correct minimum for your workplace.

Keep your contract, payslips and a record of the hours you work. If something does not look right, use the official labour standards information for your province or the federal system.
