ARTE TOKYO 2026: the best arts events for international residents

ARTE TOKYO 2026 runs until 31 December across Tokyo, with exhibitions, performances and cultural programmes spread across the city. For international residents looking for a practical place to start, the strongest current picks include the newly opened TOKYO ATLAS international art exhibition, a free photography festival, street performance in Ueno Park, an English-friendly tea ceremony and an all-night contemporary art festival in Roppongi.

TOKYO ATLAS opened on 10 October as one of the season’s largest new programmes. Its waterfront route links Daiba, Aomi and Tennoz, with free admission to the main exhibition areas and advance timed booking required for the underground parking venue at Aomi Minami Port Park.

What is ARTE TOKYO 2026?

ARTE TOKYO, formally the Tokyo International Festival of Arts and Culture, is organised by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the festival executive committee. It connects programmes across three core areas, Waterfront, Hibiya-Marunouchi and Yoyogi-Shibuya, with partner events across Tokyo’s 23 wards, Tama and Greater Tokyo.

The official ARTE TOKYO programme directory is the best place to check late changes. Babylon rechecked the programme on 14 October 2026.

Six ARTE TOKYO events worth putting in your calendar

1. T3 PHOTO FESTIVAL TOKYO 2026: free photography across central Tokyo

Dates: 3-26 October 2026
Area: Yaesu, Nihonbashi, Kyobashi and Ginza
Price: Free
Booking: No general admission booking is required for the festival

T3 PHOTO FESTIVAL TOKYO turns indoor and outdoor spaces in central Tokyo into a large photography route. It is one of the easiest ARTE partner events to sample because admission to the festival is free and the venues are spread through well-connected central neighbourhoods.

Check the official T3 PHOTO FESTIVAL TOKYO 2026 page for the exhibition map and individual programme details.

2. TOKYO ATLAS: international art across Tokyo’s waterfront

Dates: 10 October-20 December 2026
Areas: Daiba, Aomi and Tennoz
Hours: 10:00-17:00, last entry 16:30; generally closed Mondays
Price: Free admission to the main exhibition; some programmes and partner exhibitions charge separately
Booking: Timed reservations are required for the underground parking venue at Aomi Minami Port Park

TOKYO ATLAS brings work by Japanese and international contemporary artists to waterfront parks, buildings and museum spaces. The route includes Daiba Park and Odaiba Marine Park, the Telecom Center Building, Aomi Minami Port Park, Isle Shinagawa and WHAT MUSEUM. Its mix of outdoor and indoor venues makes it possible to build a short waterfront visit or a longer day across all three areas.

Check the official TOKYO ATLAS English site for the venue map, artist list, closure dates and the required Aomi reservation.

3. GREATER SHINAGAWA CINEMA JOURNEY: film across three neighbourhoods

Main dates: 16-17 October 2026, with a preview event on 4 October
Area: WATERS takeshiba, TAKANAWA GATEWAY CITY and OIMACHI TRACKS
Price: Mix of free and paid events
Booking: Varies by screening

This festival uses plazas, a rooftop bar, a large tatami space and other non-cinema venues. Many screenings are free, while some special events are ticketed. For example, the Anime Concerto at MoN Takanawa on 17 October is free, requires no advance reservation and asks each visitor to order at least one drink.

The official GREATER SHINAGAWA CINEMA JOURNEY site lists the booking rule and price for each programme.

4. HEAVEN ARTIST TOKYO 2026: free street performance in Ueno Park

Dates: 23-25 October 2026
Venue: Ueno Park
Price: Free to watch
Booking: Not required for general viewing

Tokyo’s licensed Heaven Artists will perform music and street entertainment in Ueno Park over three days. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government says visitors can watch freely, making this one of the simplest no-booking choices in the wider ARTE programme.

Check the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Heaven Artist page for the final timetable when it is released.

5. Tokyo Grand Tea Ceremony 2026: an English-friendly introduction to tea culture

Dates: 24-25 October at the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum; 31 October-1 November at Hama-rikyu Gardens
Tea ceremony price: ¥800 per person for the standard programmes; the children’s indoor programme at the museum is ¥500
Booking: Same-day tickets only, first come, first served

The Tokyo Grand Tea Ceremony is especially useful for newcomers because selected sessions include English interpretation. There is no advance application or lottery in 2026. Tickets are sold at the venue on the day and can sell out when a session reaches capacity.

Admission to the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum is free during the event period. At Hama-rikyu Gardens, garden admission is separate. The official FAQ lists ¥300 for adults and ¥150 for visitors aged 65 and over.

Use the official Tokyo Grand Tea Ceremony English site for the session schedule and same-day ticket instructions.

6. Roppongi Art Night 2026: an all-night international art programme

Dates: 31 October-1 November 2026
Core time: 17:00 Saturday to 06:00 Sunday
Area: Roppongi Hills, Mori Art Museum, Tokyo Midtown, The National Art Center and other Roppongi venues
Price: Overall event admission is free; some programmes and museum exhibitions charge fees

Roppongi Art Night is the strongest late-night option in the ARTE programme. The organisers and Mori Art Museum say more than 60 programmes are planned, including work by Japanese and international artists. Some museums extend their opening hours through the night, although individual exhibitions may require paid tickets.

How to plan ARTE TOKYO without trying to see everything

With 144 programmes listed when we checked, ARTE TOKYO is better treated as a season than a single festival weekend. Pick one area and one or two events first, then use the official programme filters for dates and neighbourhoods. Always re-check the organiser’s page on the day, especially for outdoor events.
